I had been waiting for the fest for months, finally it had arrived . Stu Faris & myself (of Emacaition) had made it safely on our 6 hour drive from Missouri's bootheel to Milwaukee. We have wanted to go for prior fests & had not had the funds to go til now, for Mass Metal webzine . Milwaukee's 12th annual Metalfest would be our greatest metal event after the weekend was finished, as we assumed . Metalfest's lineup was even more brutal than last years group of metal bands, with Mercyful Fate headlining the main stage on Friday night; Sodom, Emperor, Six Feet Under, Destruction, & Death are billed for Saturday . More than 120 bands will play at the Eagles Auditorium, on the Rave stage, & the Relapse stage . We realized as soon as we got to the show, that this was going to be a huge event . I've never seen so many hard metalheads with metal t-hirts in one place in my life ! I was blown away with all the merchandise availible in the basement . Everything from cds you thought you would never find, to metal shirts I never knew existed . Every table had free shit to take like cds, stickers, mags, & such . I was totally pleased with what we saw as we arrived . Friday, the Eagles Auditorium was just the begining of the weekend & was still spellbinding with all different types of metal . stages throughout the Eagles Auditorium had extreme metal bands going simultaneously . Bands kept to a tight schedule that allowed only a sample of music from the likes of Fleshgrind and Jungle Rot, just two of the bends restricted to twenty minute sets.
Friday after 4:00 the bands got started, & we tried to take in all of the info we needed to get around . The autograph signings from Emperor, Mayhem, Brutal Truth, Sodom, Crytopsy, Destruction, & Death made the weekend extra special . Meeting those groups in one weekend seemed unreal to me . I'll tell you about the groups we got to check out : Forest of the Impaled was a pleasant suprise to me, as I did not know they were going to play . Nile, Soilent Green, Chasm, Today Is The Day, Mexico's Cenotaph, Finland's Blood Storm, Fleshgrind, Sarcophagus, Jungle Rot, Sadus, Finnish black-metal Impaled Nazarene, Oppressor, Suffocation, Iced Earth, Immolation, Mayhem, Death, Usurper, & Mercyful Fate were the highlights of the first night !
Saturday's line up had great acts such as Somnus, Promisqies, Death of Millions, Mortician, Benumb, Death Kids, Brutal Truth, Nightworld, Mortal Decay, Obliviaxe, Midian, Engrave, Pissing Razors, Meshuggah, Deeds of Flesh, Internal Bleeding, Six Feet Under, Emperor, Destruction, & Sodom were the highlights of night two . There are so many things that were happening it would be to much for me to give alot of info on each band, but I will say that you must never miss any future metalfest events at the Eagles Ballroom !
Six Feet Under songlist : Suffering in Ecstacy, War is Coming, Nonexistence, Human Target, Enemy Inside, Torn To the Bone, Drowning, Animal Instinct, & Revenge of the Zombie .
Emperor played without their keyboardist, the songs I knew were opening with Thus Spoke The Nightspirit & Curse & Loss of Reverance . Dispite no keyboards they killed the frenzied crowd .
Metalfest is the biggest underground show in the United States. It attracts people all over the country & world . It is known fo having acts that would be had to see in any other venue together on one bill . In my opinion, Emperor makes the show worth going to. No where else will you see a bill with so many black metal acts . As I said do not miss this event next year scheduled for July 1999 30, 31... Fri. & Sat .
